Construction sites run on material movement - pumping concrete to upper floors, dredging sand and silt from riverbeds, hydro-demolition of damaged structures, and supplying water to dust suppression and curing systems. Every one of these applications destroys hose that was not specified for it. A standard water hose on a concrete pump lasts days; an undersized dredging hose collapses under vacuum or wears through in a single season.

How To Specify Hose For Construction Service

Specifying construction hose requires attention to the material being moved, not just the pressure. Concrete, sand, gravel and slurry each impose distinct wear mechanisms on the inner tube and reinforcement. Below is the engineering approach we apply when helping contractors and equipment dealers select hose for construction applications.

1. Identify the conveyed material: Concrete mix (aggregate size, slump), sand, gravel, silt, slurry or water. Aggregate size and hardness directly determine the inner tube abrasion-resistance grade required.
2. Determine operating pressure: Concrete boom pumps operate up to 85 bar; line pumps up to 65 bar. Add a 25% safety margin. Select hose rated at or above the pump's maximum relief pressure.
3. Choose inner tube compound: NR/SBR for cement and aggregate; NR/BR blend for high-abrasion dredging; EPDM for water and dust suppression; PU-blend for high-wear shotcrete nozzles.
4. Select reinforcement: Steel-braid for medium-pressure delivery; steel-cable for high-pressure boom pump hose; fabric plies plus steel helix for large-diameter dredging suction; steel cord for dredging discharge.
5. Match couplings: Flanged (ANSI / DIN / JIS), Victaulic, Bauer or Kamlock for concrete delivery; steel flanges for dredging hose; threaded or cam-lock for water supply.
6. Plan for service life: Specify wall-thickness monitoring, rotating end positions to even wear, and replacement at the first sign of cover blisters, soft spots or wall thinning. Premature failure near the coupling indicates cleaning or crimp issues.
