How To Specify Hose For Agricultural Service

Agricultural hose specification must consider the conveyed media, the operating environment and the handling the hose will receive. The wrong choice fails in a single season - the right choice runs for years. Below is the engineering approach we apply when helping irrigation dealers, sprayer manufacturers and farm supply distributors select hose for agricultural applications.

1. Identify the conveyed media: Clean water, fertilizer solution, pesticide, slurry or hydraulic oil. Chemical composition determines the inner tube compound - PVC for water, oil-resistant PVC or NBR for chemicals, EPDM for hot water and slurry.
2. Determine operating pressure: Layflat irrigation 4-10 bar; boom spray 20-40 bar; tractor hydraulic 100-280 bar. Add 25% safety margin and select hose rated at or above.
3. Consider UV and weather exposure: All outdoor agricultural hose must use UV-stabilized compounds. Dark colors resist UV better than light or clear. EPDM and UV-stabilized PVC outperform standard PVC in multi-season service.
4. Choose reinforcement: Polyester yarn for PVC layflat; synthetic fiber braid for spray hose; steel wire braid (1SN/2SN) for hydraulic; steel helix for suction and slurry.
5. Match couplings: Aluminum or cam-lock for layflat; stainless or brass for spray; SAE flange, JIC or BSP for tractor hydraulic; Bauer or flanged for slurry.
6. Plan for handling and storage: Layflat hose should drain and roll easily; spray hose should resist kinking at the boom; tractor hydraulic assemblies should include protective sleeves at abrasion points.
